Let me just say that I applaud the GWG community, why?
Because MMO players and hardcore anime fans are generally one and the same, and though some fans spoke up in a very educated calm and to the point manner against my rather invasive opinion, still I have yet to see a rabble rousing "RAWR RAWR I hate you for questioning my opinion" person, which usually would have occured by now tenfold resulting in a herd mentality of many more people following them in their opinion to get in with the crowd regardless of their actual opinion.
For this I applaud you GWG users, you've grown up so fast, I love you all.

Rugrats? Seriously? Not even near the top of Nickelodeon, let alone cartoons in general. Doug (that one is correct), Rocko's Modern Life, Hey Arnold!, Angry Beavers...all those beat Rugrats. Nowadays I'd even take Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents over Rugrats.
But I suppose this is quite off-topic.
Edit: alright, the Rugrats you speak of are worthy of a respectable spot. I just gave up on it due to the lameness that it became.

Oh jeez, I'm sorry, I completely forgot about Rocko and the Beavers.
Although, I think Rugrats beats out Hey Arnold, Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents.
Also, I'm talking about the original Rugrats stuff, circa 1993-1995, none of that "Rugrats as Teenagers" bullcorn.

I find that anime is very much like the op, my friend and his sister go to every convention around, and want me to be #3 and dress like some guy named (this is random) Frank Yukioishisa. I personally dislike anime and the games from asia (I know NCsoft is Korean, but I dislike all their games but GW (which is made by a subsidiary in Bellvue Wa. A.K.A Arena Net). I find them quite bland and when I say that, I get told that I've watched none of the good ones (I did like Hellsing for a year (the magna not the anime) until book 4 where I read the last page of the last book and missed nothing).
At one point my lil bro was watching the Saturday morning Americanized Anime Crap. Also known as TMNT, Onepiece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc. they were all being set in space, now wtf is with turtles in space fighting card playing mutant pirates (effectively what was happening). I looked at some of the ones much more suited for my age (Tri-gun, Bleach, Neon-Genisis of Anglea etc.) None of them peaked a minor intrest, they were all to predictable, repetitive, and overly worked. Things like the Simpsons, and Family Guy though being repetitive often, they usually had some kind of charm to them.
If you want my opinion on a good show, The Big Bang Theory, How I met your mother, or Least I Could Do (a webcomic).

The most common thing I hear: F*ck 4Kids. Mostly from Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series though.

Only reason for this is because this wasnt posted in Riverside. =P
Anyway I like what shows I like and as long as you're not actively trying to take that away I dont give a shit about you hating/liking it. I watch to watch and enjoy as a form of entertainment. Thats all TV shows are anyway no matter what genre they're from.

Bleach was/is a terrible anime with some bad voice actors. It starts out interesting enough, but when they get into the stuffed animals and derailing from the main plot it starts to suck big time. If you want a good anime try to find one that doesn't go beyond the 26-50 episode barrier. If it has more than that, it's probably some lame filler episode anime like Bleach, DBZ, Inuyasha, or Naruto. If you want a decent anime try something like Wolf's Reign, Full Metal Alchemist, Claymore(not for faint of heart), Trigun, Cowboy BeBop, Evangelion, Big-O, GunXSword, or Outlaw Star. There's a lot of good anime out there, but you won't find most of it on basic cable anymore.
I also find that most people that use the term weeaboo don't even know what it means. It's a term used to describe those that are OBSESSED with Japanese culture. It is NOT used to describe people who watch anime occasionally and enjoy it. I have to agree though, just as most of today's TV shows suck, so does most anime these days. If you want good anime, you have to look for it yourself usually.
As for your question... People "bend over backwards" to enjoy crappy anime and support it because... Well, I don't really know I guess... If it's boring switch it off, but why force yourself to watch it? Any good television show should grip you from start to finish, within the first few episodes you should be hooked. I imagine the people who are obsessed with stuff like Naruto and Bleach are likely too young to know what good anime is, and just watch whatever crap is on Adult Swim and get obsessed with it that way. Also, I suppose you could argue that they get obsessed with it because they don't really understand it, or they do, and are just obsessed with something foreign and "exotic" in comparison to what they normally watch.

My childhood is made out of Ren & Stimpy+ eveyrhting else people have mentioned. That show was golden insanity, and I never laughed so hard watching any other show.

american cartoons of the past decade and late 90's are complete and utter shit. spongebob, powerpuff, and countless others i dont even care to know the titles of, with shitty artwork, shitty humor (boogers, farts, hideous characters, etc). when i see my little bro and sis watching them im like wtf is that crap.
give me 90's x-men, 90's spider-man and 90's batman any day.
with anime you know it will be at least decent. while some are mind-blowingly awesome.

Or maybe just revolving around characters who are like 18 and look in their pre-teens? (Yes, I saw Lucky Star, I was curious, get off my back!)

Most anime shows suck since it's made for those obsessed individuals. There are some nice shows though (death note before L dies is awesome).

you guys forgot The Wild Thornberries, As Told by Gingers, Dexter Laboratory, Angry Beavers, Courage the Cowardly Dogs, Grim Adventure of Billy and Mandy, Cow and Chicken, not forgetting Samurai Jack :P they are all good, even the Power Puff Girls are actually good. I forgot AaaHHHH!!! Real Monsters, love them. makes me think monsters inc is a copy cat of this cartoon.
Rugrats, Sagwa the Chinese Siamese Cat, Totally Spies are amongst the least likable of them all. cos they ugly :P

Shin Chan is an anime, silly.
...And according to wiki it's 600+ episodes... It also apparently has 16 or so movies...
WHAT?!
It must be their version of The Simpsons or something. I just hope the later episodes are still funny, unlike The Simpsons. Man, that show should have died before episode 300, back when it was still funny.

I liked the beauty and gentle humour that was Samurai Jack myself.
Anime should be enjoyed by everyone.
Excuse me while I go out and rent Urutsukidoji for my 5-year-old

*Demands a rebuttal, Monk is ftw*
Anyway I am a casual fan of the anime genre at best, I really don't see peoples draw into watching any anime related show simply because it is an anime. For me if I get drawn into the storyline of any show I will continue to watch it, which is why I watch them in the first place, stand alone complex being my prime example.
It's same reason I watch any TV show for instance Monk, Dexter or Lost.
